Black Bear sighting

HOPEWELL TOWNSHIP

A black bear was spotted meandering through the Brandon Farms development yesterday, forcing outdoor activities to be suspended at Stony Brook Elementary School.

Police believe the small bear, seen walking in the woods near Avalon Way around 12:30 p.m., is the same one seen in various parts of Hopewell and Lawrence townships over the past two days.

The bear was spotted crossing Pennington Road near Interstate 95 later in the afternoon and at 3 p.m. a caller spotted it crossing I-95 near Scotch Road.

Around 7 a.m. yesterday a Lawrence resident called police to report a bear eating from a bird feeder on Viburnum Court, which is located in the Society Hill North condominium complex near Village Park.

Police were dispatched but did not find the bear.

Hopewell Township has been tracking the young bear's movements since Monday morning when a Federal City Road resident reported seeing it walking through the backyard. Hours later it was seen in the backyards of two Dublin Road homes. At 1:19 p.m. the bear was seen walking through the backyard of a home on Pennington Road.

It's been a year since Hopewell Township had a bear sighting. Bears are not uncommon in the Hopewell and Lambertville areas at this time of the year, especially near the Delaware River, and sometimes as far south as Ewing and northwest Trenton.

Residents are urged to keep garbage in bear-proof containers and keep bird feeders empty to discourage bears from seeking a free meal. Residents seeing bears should not approach them or feed them.
